"We've gotten to the point where people can no longer imagine a life without design"
Tokujin Yoshioka began his freelance career as a designer in 1992 and has gone on to become one of Japans most influential design exports. Having worked for BMW, Issey Mayake and Hermes, his works are both practical in application and imaginative in installation.
So well regarded is his work that that V&A recently featured his 'honeypop' chair within a permanent exhibition. Other works have included chairs that disappear in the rain, lighting installations and new concepts for mobile phones.
If it is concept that brings the plaudits and clients that bring commercial success, perhaps the real measure of a designers credibility lies in imitation and whilst the public may not know his works by name, you'd only have to click the gallery to see design which is now so familiar across the high street.
