Beloved of every ‘bring and buy’ sale since the dawn of time, just what is it about kitchen gadgets that sees them bought and buried in the back of a base-unit somewhere in the nether regions of your kitchen ? Here we bring you a few of our favourite kitchen gadgets - click on gallery to see more.
1) Young Bok Kim - The Hourglass Lantern works like traditional hourglasses by using LEDs instead of sand. You can adjust how long it takes for the light to flow from top to bottom by twisting the two halves like a dial. As time passes, luminance decreases on top as it increases on bottom. www.yankodesign.com 2) The Germ Eliminating Knife Block - “This knife block uses safe UV-C light--the same technology used in hospitals to kill surface bacteria on instruments--to eliminate 99.99% of food bacteria and viruses from cutlery in 20 seconds. The ultraviolet bulb sanitizes knives up to 8 3/4" long from tip to bolster, killing pathogens like salmonella, listeria, and staphylococcus to help prevent cross contamination and food-borne illness. Simply rinse the knives and place them in the block; the heat from the bulb dries knives as they are sterilized. The device can be set to turn on automatically every three hours or you can set the block to sanitize knives as soon as they are inserted. The durable ABS plastic block has five slots to accommodate chef's, serrated, boning, and pairing knives, and a wide opening that holds kitchen shears or a honing steel. Plugs into AC. 9 1/2" x 10 1/4" W x 6" D. (2 lbs.)” www.hammacher.com

Access your favourite radio stations at the touch of a button. Designed to meet Dualit’s high standards, the Dualit Lite radio is perfectly compact and portable, ideal for in or outdoor listening.
4) Keep fruits fresh with BLUE - BLUE keeps your fruits fresh. This unique gadget works on Action Fresh Blue technology, which has been successfully used in certain refrigerators. It kills bacteria to prolong the lives of fruits, without diminishing in any way the nutrition content of the fruits. here is the best part, a ring of blue light glows around the bowl when it is working. BLUE comes with a charger, and thanks to its convenient On/Off and Charge switches, is very easy to operate. The bowl is detachable and washable. www.arcelik.com.
5) The Teatool is a small, handheld kitchen gadget with a small cage on one end for your teabag and a plunger in the handle. Simply pop your teabag into the cage and place in your cup before adding boiling water, as normal. Then press the plunger to squeeze the teabag. www.gizoo.co.uk
6) This 7 LCD display can actually be integrated into your kitchen hood, enabling you to watch your favourite movie while whipping something for the rest of the family. I’m just not too sure how oil and sensitive electronics like this would fare in the kitchen environment though. You’d best be prepared to wipe oil off the LCD display constantly in order to view crisp images at all times. www.sony.com
7) Photos and magnets have become the ultimate fridge accessories, with smiley snaps of your friends and family adorning fridges across the land. So it makes sense that someone has had the bright idea to combine the two with the Fridge Magnet Photo Frame. No longer will your fridge be restricted to just a few photos, as this mini digi-frame can store up to 66 of them and scroll through them at whatever speed you desire between 5 and 80 seconds. It has 32MB of internal memory, supports JPG, GIF and BMP images, has both automatic and manual image change modes, and will scroll away happily through your photos for up to 11 hours from a single charge. A very bright idea that ensures you'll never tire of the photos on your fridge ever again.” www.thumbsupuk.com
