Room Style- Yellow and White

Minimalist Chic is so very “now”. In fact, it has been so very “now” for nearly a decade, and it doesn’t show any sign of going away. In that time the style has evolved, and moved from spacey, futuristic spaces to rooms that you can actually live in. Comfortable sofas and moderrn storage solutions have allowed you to conjour a look both liveable or utilitarian, bold or subtle.
To get this look, you need to a choose a room with space. By this I don’t mean it needs to span the length of your house and have ceilings three stories high. What I do mean is that the room must not just be a box – cosy corners, lots of light and potential features are the real pre-requisites.
Once the room is chosen (and if your going all out, the ceiling is installed with spotlights), you need to go blank canvas. Kitschy “cute” artefacts and cosy “bit’s and pieces” just won’t sit well with the bold and beautiful look.
Start with a white base coat, to really understand the room’s shape – you’d be surprised how much a room can change when it is blank, white and fresh. If it’s too stark, go for an off-white to add implied warmth, and inject further reality with funky colour and furniture.
If you wish, you can further your chosen colour scheme with blocks of dazzling colour – such as Floral Chique from www.wallpaperdirect.com – the print is subtle enough to serve as an enhancement and not a distraction from the rooms theme.
Furniture is one of the most important features of a room like this – go neutral with the floors and walls (painted floorboards look great in ice grey, and really juice it up with bright colourful pieces of gorgeous furniture. Focus on modern shapes – sharp angles and unusual layouts (see our gallery selection from Heal’s), or slip the occasional item of design or a nod in the direction of vintage furniture.
To complete this look, you need to tie everything together. Appropriately framed modern art (or prints!), fantastic screens and modern Vienne table lights will help to give the room a fresh edge, and if it all looks too overdone try a nest of tables like the ones we found at objectsonline.co.uk.
