Apartment Interior

March 17, 2009

The trouble with new apartments is that invariably they are new ... almost too new ! Getting an authentic feel to a property is a difficult design challenge for any designer and this weeks featured project, at Mount St Annes in Dublin, achieves a great blend between the best bits of living in a new home, namely the space and the light, with the added attraction of having a quirky and well thought out decor scheme with a retro feel (click launch gallery to see the project).

Nicola Pollard established Pollardesign in 2005 and has quickly built up a comprehensive portfolio of both private and commercial clients. She has won many high profile contracts with some of Ireland`s leading developers and has provided complete interior design solutions for a varied range of clients. Asked to redesign a spacious apartment with a wrap around balcony and large windows overlooking the Dublin Mountains, Nicola used an eclectic mix of fabrics and furnishings to create a truly unique living environment which doesn't feel anyway at odds with the design of the building itself.

Building on the apartment's sense of space and light, white walls were kept as a backdrop and depth in the design was achieved by adding textures through fabrics and the placement of colour at intervals throughout the design, the floors were laid using a burnished oak board.

The different mixture of fabrics in the living room from the light organza by Casamance on the windows to the colourful striped velvet on the custom made pouf/coffee table adds an interesting eclectic feel to the space. The use of various pieces of furniture such as the glass oval dining table, the antique Edwardian chair the silver leafed lamp tables and the custom made bureau makes an for an interesting interior and Nicola wanted the idea that nothing was to `match `.

The oval glass table set into the large window space is a major feature in the room which adds another dimension without disturbing the view. The grey sofa which is also a large piece is by Duff Tisdall and is contemporary but comfortable with a mixture of textured cushions to set it off. Moving into the second bedroom the lime green and silver silk curtains create a sumptuous yet contemporary feel to the room. The bed , headboard and lockers were designed by Nicola to re-create a modern 70`s look. The addition of modern textured fabrics in various size cushions on the bed completes this funky stylish bedroom.

The master bedroom exudes an air of sophistication with the introduction of zebrano wood which was used in the design of the bedhead and dressing table. This dark rich wood is set off by the white walls and pale silk grey curtains. The accent of mustard yellow silk in the cushions warms the shades of grey in the room creating a calm and interesting palette.

One of the most challenging designs of the apartment is the mirrored wall in the hall which was created using custom made pieces of bevelled mirror cut into tile size and glued and mounted onto the plaster board. Precision in the setting of this was of utmost importance as any error in the alignment of the tiles would have been immediately visable. Thankfully the weight of the mirror set well and opened up a space that previously was narrow and dull.
