The Green Room
October 25, 2008
With the winter nights drawing in and the evenings getting a bit colder we at largom have been turning our attentions to the bedroom. Of course everybody needs a comfort zone for the long winter nights but it doesn’t mean yours should cost the earth. Here are our top-tips for a green, healthier bedroom.
Green doesn’t necessarily mean green, if we start with the walls and choose paints with a low concentration of VOC’s ( volatile organic compounds ). Not only will you breathe easier at night you’ll also be taking a more responsible choice when it comes to the disposal of left over paints. Natural paints are kinder to the environment in both the manufacture of the paint itself but also for the person (probably you!) who’ll be putting it on the walls in the first place.
Shift to thrift! Recycled fabrics and furniture, as well as adding an interesting dimension to your bedroom have a smaller carbon footprint in delivery and no direct environmental impact of manufacture – all those e-bay bargains are also kinder on the credit card !
For floors why not breathe easily, reclaimed flooring helps the environment and is healthier when it comes to dust and airborne nasties. For carpets, sustainable products such as wool or recycled fabrics are becoming more widely available, adding a soft touch to flooring reduces the chemicals within a carpet itself and within the initial manufacturing process.
Getting a healthy nights sleep is crucial to your sense of well being, by investing in a mattress free of polyurethane foams or chemical fire retardants, sleeping soundly is a bit lighter for the environment and better for you. Natural fibre mattresses come in a range of different fillings, including organic wool and cotton or a specially developed latex infill.
When it comes to choosing bed-linen and blankets wools and cottons are better than polyester based fabrics and feel oh-so-luxurious when its time to curl up and count the sheep, and don’t forget duck down for a superior duvet filling, its perfectly sustainable and has a great tog rating.
