A guide to...roll top baths

October 27, 2008

Rub-a-dub dub, or something like it - when it comes to choosing a roll top bath its best to consider your options ! Essentially there are two ways to go about installing a roll top in your bathroom.

The first option is to look for a replica of an original bath from a new supplier. Over recent years there has been a greater choice on the market for homeowners looking to do this.

The principal advantages lie in the fact that original Victorian baths are not often in such great condition. This may not sound like a major consideration but when set in within the context of the shades of a shiny new bathroom, aged roll tops, unless in mint condition or expensively reconditioned, can look a little faded when placed next to new bathroom fixtures or fittings.

The other principle advantage of replica roll-tops is in the plumbing as these are more flexible when it comes to connecting the bath to existing plumbing systems.

This is all very well if you prefer buying and installing products using a mouse and the benefits of a skilled professional, but it probably doesn't cut the mustard for the traditionalists among you.

Original roll-tops were produced from the last century through to the early 1920's and were designed to a different scale than more modern houses and flats. As such, the first consideration should be the scale and dimensions of the bath your sourcing.

Your next consideration should be your budget, an original freestanding bath can vary enormously in price, depending on the condition and rarity of the style in question or the condition of original fixture such as taps and   decorative feet.

A cheaper although less straightforward method of getting the bath your home deserves is to source it directly and have any blemishes reconditioned. Be sure to check the feet and for large cracks in the structure of the bath and most of all don't be afraid to haggle.

If you look as if you know the dimensions your after and not be too discerning as to the exact style or shape a deal can be struck at most reclamation yards, it pays to make a negotiable cash offer.

Restoring a bath shouldn't be too difficult if your prepared to do the leg-work. Sourcing new taps and components should be done carefully. Old baths with small chips can be re-coloured or re-enamelled to bring back the original smoothness and the underside can be re-painted with  good quality primer and a few layers of paint to add a touch of distinction or co-ordination to your feature bath.

When it comes to fitting your bath let the experts take over, but don't book anybody until your sure your bath will fit through your existing door frames.Be ready to give a hand carrying your bath up any flights of stairs as the price your plumber quotes is unlikely to cover the cost of help from three attendants. Finally, relax, preferably in bubbles.
