Bohemian Style- The what and the how

October 31, 2008

Bohemianism is never going to be “normal”. The day-to-day, the dull and the average aren’t even on the Bohemian radar. Built around an ethos of unconventional, antiestablishment views, this is a movement sprung from creativity – artists, actors, poets and musicians. Born as it is from a world of passion, inventiveness and political unrest, Bohemianism comes pre-charged with excitement, eclectic taste and the weirdly wonderful.

Celebrities world wide are indulging in the bargain-basement opulence of the “Boho” trend, with style icons such as Sienna Miller, with youthful look and funky twist, and even top clothing designers such as Marc Jacobs and Jimmy Choo. From William Morris to Argos, little of the interiors market is unaware of this trend.

Seen commonly in fashion, the Bohemian style has transposed effortlessly to an environment that looks cosy, complex and “thrown-together”. Uniqueness is the key, and a combination of items, fabrics and styles can make every room seem wholly individual.

Bohemia on a shoestring is the traditional approach – one-off’s from car boot sales and charity shops will go down a treat. Mix these with some class and clashing styles and you can achieve the ultimate in bohemian style.

Beds add style and a touch of class, whilst giving you the ultimate framework on which to layer opulent materials, hang interesting trinkets, and recline in cosy, complicated comfort. Next, drape your room in fabrics – a bolt of turquoise from your travels to India, a quilt handed down in your family for generations – or we’re loving the Jasmine Linen Quilt from Feather and Black at £211.50.

Furniture too is important – top furniture designers are well versed in the use of artistic vision, antique styling, and bohemian individuality. I find that gothic styles mix well with the country and western feel of Boho life.

Antique pieces, sourced at local antique fairs or auctions (or even the local dump!) can add a dash of the unique, we found a beautiful chest from Wakelin & Linfield.

Finally, a bunch of accessories to give your room that exciting vibe – and remember, you will need a lot of them!
